Parenting is not easy at the best of times – but it’s considerably more challenging if your child has a complex communication need, such as autism or other developmental challenges.

Karen O’Connor is a consultant speech & language therapist and director of services at the Child Development Centre in Galway and Dublin. She has over 20 years’ experience working with children who have complex communication needs and developmental challenges.  Over the past couple of months, Proactive has been working with Karen on openingyourmind.com and her proven home programme treatment series to help children with autism, dyspraxia, sensory processing disorder and many other developmental challenges.

Rather than have families waiting for therapy, Karen wanted to share her vast knowledge and experience with parents through her series of treatment videos. There is lots of free material for parents and teachers on the website, as well as interviews with some of the world’s leading experts in the field of child development.  The website also offers home programmes for purchase to help parents understand exactly what is happening in their child’s world, and how to treat their child’s difficulties in the most effective way at home. Each programme is a compilation of nine videos that Karen has created for families, which is the equivalent of six sessions with a speech and language therapist. Each programme tackles a different topic, with titles such as  ‘Does my child really have autism (ASD)?’, ‘How to help a child with dyspraxia achieve their greatest potential’, ‘Is auditory processing disorder (APD) really for life?’ and ‘Does my child really have ADHD?’.

Karen has also been doing Facebook Live Sessions demonstrating ways and tips to help children around the globe progress at home and achieve their greatest potential. Live videos offer a powerful way to connect with your audience directly by giving a more personal experience; videos are live and unedited, lending an air of authenticity and credibility to your message. Proactive carried out a training workshop with Karen and her team on how to do Facebook Live – the results are evident, with increased traffic to the site and increased sales.
