Brand Identity for First Year Undergraduate Welcome Programme

The University of Galway provides a comprehensive welcome and settling in programme for first year undergraduate students. They provide them information on their programme, but also informs them on the supports available and provides them opportunities to connect with one another.

We provided the brand assets to the university for them to use as needed across their campaigns. We include some examples of the social media graphics they created using the logos here.

Tús maith, leath na hoibre (a good start is half the work)

The objective of the programme is to ensure students get a good foundation for success and their social, academic and personal development. This year it is proposed to use the name Tús Maith | Good Start. This name will be used to identify the programme with students and staff. The University needed a compelling brand identity that resonated with undergraduate students and their parents/supporters.

The brand identity should effectively communicate to students that through completing the programme they will be supported through the transition to third-level education. The students also needed to be encouraged to participate in all elements of the programme – digital badges or similar could be earned through its completion.

Supportive, Engaging & Empowering

The brand identity for Tús Maith | Good Start needed to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for students. It also needed to use interactive and engaging methods to help the students connect with the university community.

Finally, Tús Maith | Good Start needed to empower students with the skills and knowledge to feel confident and prepared for their academic years ahead.

What’s in a name?

Language is especially important when making a first impression. We proposed a number of straplines to convey the supportive and comprehensive nature of the programme. We aimed to emphasise the ongoing commitment to student success and well-being.

We also suggested names for the 6 key programmes that exist under the Tús Maith | Good Start brand. We aimed to provide a fresh and engaging perspective for each offering. We focused on names that were intuitive, clear, appealing and memorable.

We introduced a consistent symbol across assets and initiatives to help students and their supporters quickly identify Tús Maith | Good Start programmes.

The asterisk or star icon represents Connection & Support, while the upward arrow stands for Growth & Progress.
