Thousands of people gathered to cheer on runners all along the route. Spirits were high and the energy and enthusiasm levels shown by this year’s crowd of spectators, clearly showed why Cork is very much ‘The People’s Marathon’. Cork is a key event on the marathon calendar and it continues to reach out to people of all fitness levels, not just seasoned marathon runners.

Karen O’Donoghue, Marketing Manager, Irish Examiner, said she was delighted to be part of the success of this year’s marathon and wanted to “congratulate all who participated and volunteered, in what was a wonderful event for the city and the greater Munster region.”

Hundreds of volunteers gave up their bank holiday to help make the event possible. Charities all across Ireland and beyond benefitted from runner sponsorships and donations. Together, the team, with support from hundreds of stewards and medics pulled together to make the day a safe and enjoyable one for the whole city.

Jim O’Donovan, Race Director looked back on yet another successful event for Cork. “The 2015 Irish Examiner Cork city marathon is always an enjoyable and fun event.  The runners had a marvelous sense of achievement and everyone will have a medal to remember the day. Despite inclement weather, the people of Cork turned out in great numbers to encourage and support the runners. Our volunteers are a central part of the event and make a major contribution in stewarding, manning water stations, providing first aid and many other duties. Entertainment, provided by the Cork Academy of Music, helped shorten the miles.”

“I would like to welcome and thank our title sponsor the Irish Examiner, our other media sponsors 96FM and C103 FM, the River Lee Hotel and Keanes jewellers. Our thanks too to the Gardai who are an invaluable support as well as our Event Manager Gina Johnson who makes it all happen.”

Congratulations to all who took part. There will be a dedicated marathon results supplement free with the Irish Examiner on Thursday, 4th of June.
