Chrome To Begin Showing “Not Secure” on all Sites Without SSL Certificate In October

This latest update from Google may have a negative impact on the experience of visitors to your site as it will highlight any potential security weaknesses it may have.

Google issue warning

Google has issued an update stating:

Starting October 2017, Chrome (version 62) will show a ‘NOT SECURE’ warning when users enter text in a form on an HTTP page, and for all HTTP pages in Incognito mode.

With nearly 50% of internet users choosing Chrome as their browser, this is not something that can be ignored.

How will this affect my customers and site visitors?

The consequences of not addressing this imminent update could mean potential customers deciding not to visit your website due to the negative warning message. It also creates an adverse perception of your company’s professionalism and apparent lack of consideration for security issues.

There could also be knock-on effects for your website’s SEO. Your page will be flagged on Google Search Engine Results Page (SERP) as “not secure”, resulting in less chance of a click through to your site. HTTPS is now an official ranking factor.

Do I actually need an SSL Cert?

If your site allows users to input data, you will be required to have a secure connection.
For example, do you have a search box or contact form on your website that runs over HTTP? You will need to switch your pages over to HTTPS by October to avoid warnings.

What do I need to do?

Please contact Proactive today to upgrade your site to make it compliant. The cost for an SSL Cert starts at €99.
